Liter of Light 2: Output of the surveys

Following the post Liter of Light 1, which was about the project itself, this post aims to share the information the previous cycles gathered during their survey.

Output of the surveys concerning the Liter of Light project

Both of the previous cycles who included the Liter of Light in their survey were doing research in the barangay Mintal but both applied their surveys in different puroks. This is why they came to different results that will be compared in this post. Group 1 surveyed purok 2 and 10 of barangay Mintal while Group 2 surveyed the puroks 4 and 15.

Knowledge about the project and opinion about the Liter of Light

In the puroks that were surveyed by Group 1 approximately 52% of the people interviewed knew about the Liter of Light project. When asked about their opinion on the usefulness of Liter of Light around 93% of the people answered that the project could be useful. Meanwhile in the puroks of Group 2 the answers were quite different. Even though 65% of the people living in purok 4 and 15 knew about Liter of Light only 67% of the people interviewed found the idea useful. The Group described this outcome to be reasoned by certain problems in communicating with some of the people they encountered. Some of them didn't understand English too well and even though the volunteers were accompanied by locals as support some of the people living there didn't grasp the concept and idea of Liter of Light. This was considered to be the reason for the different outcome of the survey in the puroks of Group 2.

Interest in the installation of Liter of Light at their own homes and interest in helping to install Liter of Light in other places

With 92% almost all of the interviewed people of Group 1 were interested in the installation of the Liter of Light at there own homes. Only few less (90%) also wanted to participate in installing the Liter of Light in other houses. This shows another positive side of this project since only half of the people of barangay Mintal knew about Liter of Light before the survey. However the results of Group 2 strongly differed again. Only 57% of the people of puroks 4 and 15 wanted to install the Liter of Light at their home. Also only 56% of the inhabitants wanted to help with the installation of the Liter of Lights in other homes. This outcome probably has the same reasons as stated in the previous passage.

Conclusion

Even though the Liter of Light project can only be used during daytime it can be a useful way to reduce electricity consumption especially in poorer regions, where people don't have homes in which they can use the daylight via windows. The survey showed that many people are interested in this model but simply didn't know about it. Another problem was that some people didn't conceive the idea of Liter of Light and thus weren't convinced of the idea. Therefore government or other organizations should put more effort into promoting and also explaining the Liter of Light in poorer regions in particular to activate this possibility of reducing energy consumption.
